Votes for Women, LRB's 19th Amendment comics anthology, is now live on Kickstarter!
Little Red Bird Press has launched its seventh Kickstarter campaign for its next publication, the all-womxn comics anthology, Votes for Women: The Battle for the 19th Amendment.
Through 200+ pages of comics and illustrations, Votes for Women reflects on the fight for female suffrage in light of its upcoming centennial. The book covers topics such as:
Profiles on well-known and little-known suffragists, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Rose O'Neill, Komako Kimura, and Juana Colón.
Comics about key events in the 19th Amendment's history, such as the 1913 suffrage parade in Washington DC and the Night of Terror at the Occoquan Workhouse.
Pieces investigating the complexity of the movement, like the racism that divided many of its activist groups and the forgotten women of color who were key to its success.
A look at the movement's continuing effects, including the League of Women Voters and the Equal Rights Amendment.
Thirty-two womxn artists contributed to the anthology, including Whit Taylor (The Nib), Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris (My Lady’s Choosing), LA Johnson (NPR), Nomi Kane (The New Yorker), Jamaica Dyer (Mixtape), and Rumi Hara (Nori). The anthology is being edited by Little Red Bird’s Ally Shwed (Boston Globe, Fault Lines in the Constitution).
The campaign will run through March 17. The book will be featured at a panel on Women and Comics at the Women's Rights National Historical Park centennial celebrations in Seneca Falls, NY (August 2020). Five percent of every book sold will be donated to She Should Run, a non-profit which supports women considering a run for public office.
